anCnoc Blas Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Blas is anCnoc at 54% — the Knockdhu distillery's cask-strength no-age-statement Highland malt, named with the Gaelic for taste, and dressed by the Scottish designer Patrick Grant. John Morrison built Knockdhu on Knock Hill in Banffshire in 1894 from local grey granite, with spring water from the hill and worm-tub condensers that give the spirit weight; Inver House bought it in 1988 and rebranded the whisky anCnoc, Gaelic for the hill. Blas, launched 2016, is the range's high-proof entry: Highland malt matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 54% without chill filtration, in a bottle Grant designed for the modern Scot. Expect the anCnoc apple-and-honey signature at full weight: a nose of green apple, honey, vanilla, and lemon with a malty, waxy note; a big, creamy palate of barley sugar, pear, toffee, and white pepper with the worm-tub body carrying it; and a long, warm, spiced finish that the 12 can't reach. Honest note: the anCnoc for the drinker who found the 12 too polite — 54% from a Highland distillery known for delicacy is a rare combination, and the price is under most cask-strength malts; for the Highball at strength and the bourbon drinker crossing into Scotch. Neat, with water to open. Blas, taste.
