James Fleming founded Aberlour in 1879, and A'bunadh — Gaelic for the original — has been the distillery's 100% Oloroso cask-strength release since 1997; Alba, Gaelic for Scotland, arrived in 2021 as its counterpart: the same spirit, the same natural strength, matured only in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, so you can taste what the sherry was hiding. Whisky Centurion on batch 7 at 58.9%: orchard fruit — pear, apple, apricot — with vanilla, honey, citrus, orange blossom, and baking spice on the nose; vanilla, honey, peppery spice, oak, and lemon zest on a creamy palate; and a medium, sweet-and-spicy finish of vanilla and cinnamon — a brighter, fruitier, more delicate side of the distillery. Expect a big, clean, honeyed malt at strength — the Aberlour fruit without the raisins. Honest note: reviewers say it's undoubtedly good and lacks the sherried version's depth, which is the point — for the bourbon drinker who wants cask-strength Scotch without sherry, and the A'bunadh fan curious what's underneath; check your bottle for the batch. Neat, with water.
